ubuntu hacked

Not Ubuntu but the Ubuntu Forums Been hacked today with attackers having more than 1.8 million account details
Every user’s local username, password, and email address [were stolen] from the Ubuntu Forums database Canonical say in a statement posted on the website, adding that while the passwords (stolen) are not stored in plain text  those who use the same password on other services should change the password on the other service[s] ASAP.

Great news on that are Ubuntu One and Launchpad, are not affected by the breach.

This all happened on Saturday the 20th of july. The main page was redirected to that of an image touting a twitter account – @Spuntn1k_ – and text that read: “You dun goofed, it’s as simple as that”.

So what was the reason behind this? and how did that Happened ?are the main questions hat may arose in everyone's mind...

Some Security Experts specify that this happened due to lack of protection on Backend, also it has been said that the Forum was on an outdated version of vBulletin whose Admin Panel was unsafe.

There's a new question that why do hacker's need to hack any open source system ?why is it necessary?what do they want from an open source system through hacking which they cannot have without hack?
